Publish Date: 2004-06-01
Features: Many of the microscopic photographs in this atlas were originally published in Diagnostic Atlas of Tumors by Dr. Arthur Skarin. These valuable photographs were provided by pathologists at Community Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. The book first provides the author with important foundational knowledge about the medical history and biological characteristics of breast cancer. It will enable us to adopt a more cautious attitude toward various new treatment methods, avoiding premature acceptance and widespread application of these new therapies before they undergo sufficient trials. Currently, it is believed that all breast cancers are systemic at the time of diagnosis, thus sharing similar limitations. Secondly, a comprehensive understanding of the biological characteristics of breast cancer will guide us toward new treatment goals. The authors of this book have rigorously examined a large number of cases. This atlas introduces the basic concepts of the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of breast cancer in a diagrammatic form. The book not only emphasizes the progress achieved in surgery and medical treatment but also summarizes the theory that maintaining a complete appearance is crucial for the overall health of breast cancer patients. Chapter 2 discusses the potential causes of breast cancer and the identification of high-risk women, with special attention given to the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Chapter 3 discusses the anatomy and development of the normal breast. Chapter 4 provides a review of the new field of chemoprevention. Chapter 5 discusses the techniques and results of screening and the diagnostic value of mammography. Chapters 6 to 10 use a diagrammatic approach to illustrate the importance of the interaction of multiple methods in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, emphasizing the prevention of recurrence while achieving acceptable aesthetic results. Chapters 11 and 12 discuss the progress in systemic treatment (hormonal and chemotherapy) over the past 20 years. These chapters include the major achievements recognized in early combined therapy for the prevention of recurrence. Finally, in Chapter 13, the local and systemic therapies for recurrent (metastatic) breast cancer are discussed in detail, including various diagnostic techniques for detecting cancer metastasis.
