Features: Chen Peixun (1921–) is a composer. Born in Hong Kong, he is from Hepu, Guangxi. In 1939, he enrolled in the Shanghai National Conservatory of Music to study composition. After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan, he taught at art academies in Hong Kong, Qujiang, Chongqing, and Shanghai. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he served as an associate professor, professor, and director of the Orchestration Teaching and Research Office at the Central Conservatory of Music for many years. In the 1980s, he taught at the Department of Art Education at Hong Kong Baptist College. His major works include piano compositions such as Selling Groceries, Spring Thoughts, and Variations on Butterflies Flying in Pairs, as well as symphonic poems like Rising Tides of the Heart and Overcoming Obstacles from Scratch, and tone poems such as Flowing Water. The Second Symphony "Tomb-Sweeping Day Sacrifice" was composed in 1980. The work draws its material from three poems in the Anthology of Poems at Tiananmen Square from 1976, expressing a commemoration of the heroic sacrifice of the Chinese people for truth. The symphony is written in a single-movement sonata form, divided into three sections: 1. "Before the Martyrs' Monument"; 2. "Dance of the Loyal Souls"; 3. "The Legacy Transformed into a Grand Plan," which are performed consecutively. The symphony won the Excellence Award at the "National th Music Composition (Symphonic Music) Competition" in 1981.
