Features: Historians must be fair and courageous; otherwise, they cannot earn respect. Professor Tang Degang was a respected historian known for his fairness and courage. For example, Zhang Xueliang's praise from Tang Degang is a clear case. In the article "Zhang Xueliang's Pure Heart," there is the following passage: "Therefore, if we observe Zhang Xueliang General from the perspective of 'the Great Principles of Spring and Autumn,' he was indeed a patriotic general with pure motives, a clear conscience, the courage to act, the ability to let go, and never losing his childlike heart." — Hu Jiu-ren
In this student group of over 10,000, if Fu Si-nien, Luo Jia-lun, Zhang Guo-tao, and other Peking University students were Hu Jiu-ren's first-generation disciples, then scholars like Yu Ping-bo, Qian Jia-ju, Wu Jian-xiong, and Su Mei could be considered the "second generation," and so on, with four, five, or even six or seven generations more. I cannot help but admit that I am also a student of Hu Shi. During his lifetime, Hu Jiu-ren always introduced me as his student, and I never denied it. Being a student of Hu Jiu-ren was not an honorary degree, nor was it a great honor, but it was also neither a flaw nor a burden. However, as his student, apart from following him to listen to his lectures, I did not formally earn his credits. Yet, I took a separate course on "Hu Shi Studies" for about 1,000 hours—something unprecedented among all of Hu Shi's students. I was not there to carry his luggage or entertain guests; I was truly attending classes—this I must feel deeply grateful for his mentorship!—as his last disciple. — Tang Degang
This book includes: "Back from the Brink in the Hu Shi Era" — one of the speeches from the memorial lecture series marking the 25th anniversary of Hu Shi's death; "Hu Shi in Prospect" — preface to the revised edition of "Selected Letters of Hu Shi"; essays on Hu Shi by Qian Jia-ju, etc.
