Publish Date: 2006-01-01
Features: This book includes Nanxing's translation of "Half-Known World," as well as the Chinese translations of Wen Yuanning's English critiques from the 1930s that can currently be collected. These translations encompass both appreciations of modern English and American poetry, critiques of Chinese painting, and recommendations for British prose collections. Although some translations are somewhat rough, they are still sufficient to glimpse Wen Yuanning's multifaceted academic achievements. It is necessary to point out that Wen Yuanning is the earliest person known to introduce the great poet T.S. Eliot and the renowned novelist D.H. Lawrence to the Chinese public, a contribution that is undeniable. The appendix includes Lin Yutang's translations of "Wu Mi" and "Hu Shi Zhi" for comparison with Nanxing's translations; it also includes Qian Zhongshu's book review "Not Yet a True Friend," Zhang Zhongxing's preface to the Yuelu edition of "Half-Known World," and Huang Jundong's "Incomplete Understanding," a Hong Kong literary critic, to slightly showcase the influence of "Half-Known World" in different historical periods.
