The book is published in volumes. Marshals and field marshals are arranged according to the official list released at the time. Others are sorted by seniority as senior generals, medium-ranking generals, and junior generals, with names within the same rank ordered by stroke count. Generals promoted between 1955 and 1964, including those promoted to higher ranks in 1988 or later, are introduced in the text but not listed in the roster order. The volume includes 10 marshals, 10 field marshals, 57 senior generals, and 177 medium generals. The 1,360 junior generals are divided between the second and third volumes. A few individuals later took a negative path, but to accurately reflect history and preserve the complete records, they are still included in this book.
