This textbook is based on the "Implementation Outline for the Mandarin Proficiency Test" compiled by the National Mandarin Training and Testing Center in 2004, designed for students and people from all walks of life to learn Mandarin Chinese and prepare for the Mandarin Proficiency Test. It includes concise knowledge of Mandarin, an introduction to the test, and training materials.
The Mandarin knowledge section starts from the practical needs of learners and test takers, adhering to the principle of "concise explanations and extensive exercises," emphasizing the practicality, targeting, and readability of the content. It adopts a textbook format, providing comprehensive training in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The theory is simple, and the training materials are rich and easy to use.
The test section is reorganized based on the new unified test content to facilitate quick mastery by learners while striving for innovation:
- Test words are sorted by frequency, with 100 words per group, making learning convenient;
- Common words are carefully grouped into vocabulary for contextual learning;
- Difficult words and phrases used in the test are selected for focused practice to enhance learning effectiveness;
- Light tone words are categorized and sorted for easy memorization;
- Pinyin is annotated for Mandarin words and sentences in the "Choice and Judgment" sections to assist learners from dialect-speaking regions;
- Articles are fully and meticulously annotated with pinyin, with contrasting upper-case and lower-case versions. In some articles, the transformation of the upper tone is marked with vivid new symbols to help learners grasp and testers evaluate.
- Speaking topics include outline prompts to help test takers prepare their responses.
At the same time, while remaining faithful to the test content, the book strives to avoid errors in annotation, audio, and knowledge, providing learners and testers with a comprehensive and accurate reference. Most of the practice materials in this textbook are annotated with pinyin for convenience. The book includes 5 hours of MP3 audio recordings, covering key content such as easily misread words and phrases, light tone and erhua words, dialect correction words, sound-rhyme-tones words, and the 60 standardized test articles used nationwide.
