Features: The Commercial Press is a century-old tree, a substantial book. Whether from the perspective of modern cultural history or modern publishing history, the Commercial Press is a subject worthy of serious study. In recent years, the academic world has begun to re-examine the Commercial Press, which is a rightful development. In 1999, Comrade Shi Chunfeng was admitted to the Department of History at Beijing Normal University and pursued his Ph.D. under my supervision. He is a diligent and talented scholar with excellent writing skills. When discussing the topic of his doctoral dissertation, we ultimately decided on "The Commercial Press and Modern Chinese Culture." Although there have already been some achievements in academic research on the Commercial Press, Comrade Shi Chunfeng's dissertation takes a unique approach with its own distinctive perspective. He places the Commercial Press within the historical process of the collision and integration of modern Chinese and Western cultures, conducting a long-term and systematic examination. He focuses on the rise and development of the Commercial Press, particularly its relationships with modern political thought, modern Chinese and Western cultures, modern education, and modern cultural figures, offering many independent insights that contribute to a deeper understanding of the Commercial Press and even modern cultural history. The author paid close attention to collecting extensive materials and utilized the favorable conditions in Beijing to interview elderly employees of the Commercial Press, ensuring that his dissertation is grounded in solid historical evidence. This book is the result of further enriching his doctoral dissertation in his spare time from teaching. Academic research has no end. Comrade Shi Chunfeng has taken a commendable step, and we believe he will continue to achieve new accomplishments. This book is a publication supported by the Beijing Social Science Fund. The author has traced the history of the Commercial Press in a verifiable manner, clarifying many historical issues, particularly providing convincing arguments on the relationship between the Commercial Press's publishing industry and the development of modern Chinese culture.
