Features: The study of international Cold War history is largely based on a large number of declassified and open historical archives and documents from relevant countries, including the United States and the former Soviet Union. This series of books is compiled based on research achievements made using these new archival materials, serving as lecture notes on the special topic of international Cold War history at Peking University. This book focuses on the direct confrontation and compromises between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War, covering topics such as: the mechanisms and overview of the Cold War, the formation of the bipolar, the U.S. containment strategy, the Soviet foreign policy, U.S. and Soviet policies toward the Third World, U.S.-Soviet arms control and disarmament, and the Sino-U.S.-Soviet triangular relationship. The lecture notes primarily address some major issues in the relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union. Since the history of the Cold War, from its origins to its end, was mainly the history of the relationship between the two superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, the policies and interactions between the two superpowers run through all the major issues mentioned above. However, this lecture notes aim to differ from other works and adapt to the needs of specialized teaching. Its main purpose is not to generally narrate the historical evolution of the relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War, nor to generally analyze some major historical events, let alone to cover everything comprehensively. Its features are primarily reflected in the following two aspects. First, it strives to outline the macroscopic picture of the Cold War. Second, under the macroscopic picture, it emphasizes highlighting the formation, main content, and development and evolution of the respective security strategies, foreign policies, and other aspects of the United States and the Soviet Union from the rise to the end of the Cold War.
