Features: With China's entry into the WTO, the agricultural product market has been strongly driven, and the agricultural industrial structure has been continuously adjusted. As a result, China's edible mushroom industry has achieved sustained and rapid development, with production scale expanding year by year, market prices constantly rising, and significant economic benefits. By 2004, China's total edible mushroom production had exceeded 10 million tons, accounting for over 70% of the world's total, with export value reaching over $700 million, representing over 40% of the global market. China has become a renowned superpower and major exporter of edible mushrooms. The entire industry is in a vigorous development phase, playing an increasingly important role in agricultural industrial restructuring, increasing farmers' income, accelerating the transfer of rural surplus labor, and promoting the sustainable development of agricultural ecology.
Edible mushroom production technology is simple, easy to operate, requires low investment, and has a short production cycle. Raw materials such as straw can be processed through simple methods (not competing for grain resources) and then cultivated into mushrooms after sowing and incubation. Production can be flexibly arranged according to agricultural seasons, avoiding peak farming periods (not competing for time). Edible mushroom cultivation can utilize idle spaces in front of and behind houses, vegetable greenhouses, silkworm houses, arch greenhouses, buildings, and air raid shelters, without occupying prime land (not competing for land). After harvesting mushrooms, the spent mushroom compost can be applied to farmland, vegetable plots, or orchards, completely replacing the role of organic or compound fertilizers (not competing for fertilizer resources) while saving significant costs. As a result, farmers can easily adopt this industry.
Edible mushroom products are "two-high" (high in protein and quality), "four-low" (low in salt, sugar, fat, and calories), and "six-rich" (rich in medicinal substances, flavoring substances, aroma substances, vitamins, minerals, and fiber), combining the strengths of both meat and vegetables. They are considered a "peak of plant-based foods" and "meat among vegetables," and they are highly regarded as a high-end vegetable with numerous health and nutritional benefits. Moreover, in
