Features: This book explores various aspects such as wedding customs documents, funeral customs documents, birthday customs documents, folk arts, and social life, providing a detailed introduction to a portion of folk documents collected by the author. The selected folk documents in this book include ceremonial and contractual documents that record folk processes in activities like weddings, funerals, birthdays, and social rituals, such as wedding invitations, engagement notices, marriage approval notices, various wedding documents, obituaries, death notices, red-white event etiquette lists, and golden brotherhood certificates. There are also documents reflecting special social customs and institutional practices, such as merit certificates, licenses, and prison certificates. This book is not an academic monograph on folk studies but rather utilizes the author's existing collection, focusing on Han folk customs in Beijing and the North China region. Starting from the etiquette of old Beijing, it also touches on the characteristics of Manchu folk customs, striving to trace the folk practices and historical stories behind each document. Folk documents are vast and varied, but the author has only selected a portion of Han-language folk documents to provide a possible reference for collectors. Contracts related to economic activities in different eras and religious folk documents are not included in this book. Additionally, a large number of folk documents written in minority languages are not the focus of this work. Folk customs are the historical accumulation of life journeys, yet they inevitably undergo renewal and transformation with the progression of history. We cannot turn back time, and the vanished customs are like childhood dreams to us—distant and no longer present. Just as humans are naturally inclined to trace their roots, they also have an innate nostalgia for folk customs, especially in today's fast-paced modern society, where people are often overwhelmed by fleeting phenomena and seek psychological solace from the traditions of the past. This phenomenon not only makes folk customs an important resource for cultural heritage in the new century but also brings new perspectives and challenges to the study of social history. As the meaning and scope of modernization continue to evolve, people's understanding of traditional culture is also being elevated. Folk documents and the rich cultural elements they contain are gaining increasing attention from more and more people and are being regarded as an important part of traditional culture by numerous researchers for study.
