Features: This book conducts a comprehensive study of the urban development of Wuhu in the 20th century based on a large amount of primary historical materials. It divides the development of Wuhu into three stages—early progress, rebirth and development, and rapid development—using major historical events as markers. The book provides a thorough analysis of the urban development conditions and their causes in each stage, delves into the characteristics exhibited by Wuhu's urban development in each phase, and summarizes the laws of urban development in Wuhu. Since the reform and opening-up, Wuhu has entered a stage of rapid modernization. Through reforms, Wuhu has transitioned its economic system from socialist planned economy to socialist market economy. Since the reform and opening-up, the modernization of Wuhu has demonstrated three distinct features: holistic development, where urban development has made comprehensive progress in material, institutional, and ideological aspects; diversified development, achieving diversity in ownership structures, lifestyles, and urban functions; and interactive development between old and new industries. Wuhu has accelerated its modernization from a relatively low starting point, forming a situation where both old and new pillar industries jointly support the city's economy. Meanwhile, the progress in rural areas has been even more evident. This is primarily due to the correct development strategies formulated by the Wuhu local government in the context of accelerating economic globalization. Alongside strengthening management, the local government has enhanced its service awareness; social participation has increased; and the advantages of geographical location and resource endowments have been better leveraged.
