1. The preparation of coal samples for classification shall be carried out in accordance with GB474-1983. Coal samples with an ash content of less than or equal to 10% do not require ash reduction. Coal samples with an ash content greater than 10% shall be classified after ash reduction using the specified zinc chloride heavy liquid (for low rank lignite prone to mudization, the original coal with the lowest possible ash content may be used).
2. G=85 is the index conversion line. When G>85, Y and b values are used in parallel as classification indicators to distinguish coking coal from other coal types. Y>25.0 mm are classified as coking coal or gas coking coal; when Vr≤28.0%, b is temporarily set at 150%; when Vr>28.0%, b is temporarily set at 220%. When there is a contradiction between b and Y values in classifying coal types, the Y value takes precedence.
3. The subdivision of anthracite is determined by Hr and Vr. In case of contradiction, the subdivision based on Hr takes precedence.
4. Vr>37.0% and PM>50% are classified as bituminous coal; with PM between 30% and 50%, Q-AGW.GN>24 MJ/kg are classified as long-flame coal.
4 Symbols
4.1 Classification indicators are represented by the following symbols:
Vr – Volatiles on dry ash-free basis, %;
Hr – Hydrogen content on dry ash-free basis, %;
GR.I (abbreviated as G) – Coking index of bituminous coal;
Y – Maximum thickness of the plastic layer of bituminous coal, mm (mm);
b – Swelling degree of bituminous coal, %;
PM – Transmittance of coal sample, %;
Q-AGW.GN – Gross calorific value of coal on moist ash-free basis, MJ/kg.
4.2 The names of various coal types can be represented by the following Pinyin letters as codes:
WY – Anthracite;
YM – Bituminous coal;
PM – Lean coal;
PS – Lean-fat coal;
SM – Fat coal;
JM – Coke coal;
FM – Coking coal;
1/3JM – 1/3 coke coal;
QF – Gas coking coal;
QM – Gas coal;
1/2ZN – 1/2 medium caking coal;
RN – Weak caking coal;
BN – Non-caking coal;
CY – Long-flame coal;
HM – Lignite.
5 Sampling and Sample Preparation
5.1 Coal samples for classification shall be collected in accordance with GB482-1981, GB481-1964, GB475-1983, and the "Procedures for Coal Sampling in Coal Resource Exploration" promulgated by the Ministry of Coal in 1979.
5.2 The preparation of coal samples for classification shall be carried out in accordance with GB474-1983. Coal samples with an ash content of less than 10% do not require ash reduction, while those with an ash content greater than 10% shall be classified after ash reduction using the specified zinc chloride heavy liquid.
5.3 The special anthracite used for determining the coking index shall be collected, prepared, and quality-assessed in accordance with the appendices of GB5447-1985 "Determination Method for Coking Index of Bituminous Coal."
6 Analytical Methods
6.1 Volatiles on dry ash-free basis shall be determined in accordance with GB212-1977.
6.2 Hydrogen content on dry ash-free basis shall be determined in accordance with GB476-1979.
6.3 Coking index shall be determined in accordance with GB5447-1985.
6.4 Maximum thickness of the plastic layer shall be determined in accordance with GB479-1964.
6.5 Swelling degree shall be determined in accordance with GB5450-1985.
6.6 Transmittance shall be determined in accordance with GB2566-1981.
6.7 Calorific value shall be determined in accordance with GB213-1979.
6.8 The maximum inherent moisture of coal shall be determined in accordance with GB4632-1984.
