To ask a question is often more important than to solve one, because solving a problem may merely require mathematical or experimental skills. However, to propose new questions, new possibilities, and to view old problems from new perspectives requires creative imagination and marks the true progress of science. — Albert Einstein
Entering the 21st century, the Ministry of Education issued the new compulsory education curriculum standards, and the publication of experimental textbooks for compulsory education under the guidance of these new standards is an important milestone in the deepening of educational reform in China. According to the planning and arrangements of the Ministry of Education, the experimental textbooks for compulsory education curriculum standards have been published. The new textbooks give a fresh and innovative impression, adhering to the requirements of the new era and the concept of quality-oriented education. They strive to reflect the new perspectives on curriculum, textbooks, teaching, and learning, with the focus on cultivating students' innovative spirit and practical abilities, and with the goal of improving students' comprehensive qualities. Their use is bound to be warmly welcomed by teachers and students.
How to deeply understand the new curriculum standards and how to improve students' qualities, especially their ability to explore independently, have become pressing new issues. The writing of this series of books is a new attempt in this regard. Based on a thorough exploration and study of the new curriculum standards, we have compiled the experience of recent years in research and exploratory learning, combined with the content of the new textbooks, to concretize the basic concepts and requirements of the new curriculum standards. This is beneficial not only for students to learn the new textbooks but also for them to improve their own qualities and abilities.
This series of books strives to highlight the following features:
First, the modernity and openness of the content. Modern society is an open one, but many previous textbooks and supplementary materials were outdated and monotonous, no longer meeting current needs or those of students. Therefore, this series incorporates many fresh elements, fully considering students' existing experiences, interests, and needs, and widely utilizing multimedia and other information resources. This makes the content of the books novel and vivid, effectively stimulating students' learning interest.
Second, emphasizing the combination of autonomy and exploration. The new curriculum standards strongly emphasize the cultivation of students' exploratory abilities, and the new textbooks also focus on the selection and updating of basic knowledge and skills. On this foundation, they place greater emphasis on improving students' comprehensive qualities and innovative and practical abilities. Therefore, this series includes both training in autonomy to help students build a solid foundation and cultivate the habit of self-directed learning, as well as the development of exploratory abilities. Through life-related content and diverse presentation methods, students can explore and gain new knowledge and experiences, thereby comprehensively improving their qualities and abilities.
Third, focusing on the integration of different subjects, providing more background information, and emphasizing the connections between disciplines. The knowledge points are integrated into an organic whole as much as possible through transfer and expansion, highlighting the interrelationships between different subjects.
