Features: Regular script matured in the Tang Dynasty. If the various masterpieces of this era, represented by the Jiucheng Palace Stele, are regarded as the outcome of regular script, then the works like the Longmen Stele Inscriptions of the Northern Wei Dynasty can be called its mother body. In its robust and simple posture, its rational pursuit of form, and the spirit of spatial structure required of regular script, the Northern Wei regular script fully demonstrates its vitality. This book selects eight representative pieces from the numerous Longmen Stele Inscriptions, such as the Stele of Sun Qiusheng and the Stele of Prince Yuan Xiang of Beihai, and divides them broadly into two calligraphic styles: the square-style system and the round-style system. It systematically classifies and elaborates on their structures and brushwork, respectively, to explain the charm of Northern Wei calligraphy.
