This book was written by teachers from the Department of Overseas Training at Beijing Language and Culture University, drawing on years of experience in IELTS training and teaching, as well as a detailed analysis of the IELTS exam. Since its publication in 1997, the Course has been praised byIELTS test-takers for its rich and comprehensive content, diverse exercise formats, scientific and practical organization, and its ability to accurately address exam key points and the difficulties faced by Chinese test-takers.
The purpose of this book is to enable students to master different oral language skills required in various contexts through extensive authentic English speaking materials and diverse speaking exercises. This will improve their practical ability to use these skills, allowing them to express themselves fluently, coherently, and accurately, thereby meeting the needs of living, studying, and working abroad in the future.
The textbook is divided into a Student Book and a Teacher Book; the dialogues, exercises in Unit 18, and the simulated speaking in Unit 19 are accompanied by audio recordings. Each lesson is generally composed of three parts: Dialogue, Language Focus, and Exercises.
Dialogue: Through real dialogues, students are shown how to use different oral language skills in various contexts.
Language Focus: These are the specific oral language skills that students should master. In addition to expressions used in the dialogues, additional various expressions are provided in each lesson to expand students' oral language knowledge.
Exercises: Based on the needs of living, studying, and working abroad, as well as the format of the IELTS Speaking test, each unit provides a large number of speaking exercises, with a particular emphasis on continuous and fluent expression. The exercise formats are diverse, such as: pair work, group exercises, whole-class activities, individual topic presentations, and fun games.
To meet the needs of IELTS Speaking test takers, this book does not specifically introduce the content and format of the IELTS Speaking test or how to prepare for it. Instead, it provides three sets of simulated speaking tests along with a large number of exercises similar to those in the test, such as discussion topics, cue cards, and potential questions that may be asked during the test.
To help students achieve better results when using this textbook, the authors recommend first mastering the various oral expression skills introduced in the book, practicing them repeatedly, and using these techniques correctly in real contexts to express themselves fluently and accurately.
