Patient's question:
Dear Doctor,Hello, I would like to ask you a question and hope you can help me. I am a patient with a balanced chromosomal translocation. The test results show: 46 XY inv(9). My wife had two or three miscarriages before giving birth to a daughter, who is now almost 13 months old. She appears intelligent, lively, and adorable, just like a normal child. However, after reading many books and researching online about chromosomal balanced translocation patients and their offspring, I have become very worried. Please help me analyze the situation and see if my daughter is completely normal. Should we undergo any further tests?
Thank you.
Doctor's answer:
The general probability of a couple with balanced translocations having a completely healthy child is 1/18. The probability of having a child with the same balanced translocation as the parents is also 1/18. The remaining 16/18 cases will naturally miscarry around 60 days. Generally, it takes the third or fourth child for the couple to have the aforementioned 2/18 children. Some people, by chance, may have their first child (smoothly born), and may never realize they have balanced translocations throughout their lives.Additionally, balanced translocations have no relationship to the physiological characteristics of the child after birth; they only affect fertility, making it easier to experience miscarriages.
