With the continuous improvement of college foreign language teaching standards, the starting point for postgraduate foreign language learning has also been rising year by year. The College English Teaching Syllabus and the Postgraduate English Teaching Syllabus have been revised accordingly. At the time of enrollment, the majority of students have already acquired a solid language foundation and have passed the College English Test Band 4 (CET-4), with many even passing Band 6 (CET-6). However, in terms of textbooks, many schools still use the College English (Revised Edition) 5 and 6 volumes published by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP). To develop textbooks that meet the demands of the new era, FLTRP organized a textbook writing committee meeting with representatives from 10 key universities, including Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, Shandong University, Sun Yat-sen University, Dalian University of Technology, and Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and conducted extensive and in-depth research. Based on a thorough analysis of the current state of postgraduate English teaching, this series of textbooks was developed. The following points were considered during the writing process:
1. Exercise design and activity arrangements are learner-centered, emphasizing the cultivation of applied skills.
2. To address the decline in listening and speaking abilities among postgraduates, specialized textbooks were created, focusing on the development of oral and listening skills.
3. The texts cover a variety of themes and genres, staying up-to-date with current trends.
4. Emphasis is placed on translation and writing (especially academic writing) skills.
5. While highlighting grammar and syntax, the teaching of textual knowledge is also integrated.
The FLTRP Postgraduate Public English Series consists of the following components:
- Reading: Student Books A, B, C and Teacher Books A, B, C (3 volumes each)
- Listening: Student Books (Upper and Lower) and Teacher Books (2 volumes each)
- Oral and Interpreting: 1 volume
Although FLTRP has successful experience in writing large-scale textbooks, such as the College English (Revised Edition) and the New College English series, which have been widely welcomed by faculty and students across the country, postgraduate English teaching is highly complex, with students coming from diverse backgrounds and varying proficiency levels. This series of textbooks may have certain shortcomings. We sincerely hope that faculty and students will communicate with us frequently while using this textbook, providing valuable suggestions and feedback so that we can continuously revise, improve, and refine it.
The audio materials for this series of textbooks are published by Shanghai Foreign Language Audiovisual Publishing House.
