Drawings of characters in line by Dai Dунбэн (Figures, folded figures)

Features: He followed the path of a folk artist, relying entirely on his own exploration. His creation began with drawing serial illustrations, often circling within the realm of traditional themes, as if untouched by modern life. To be honest, I was a bit worried he might become a "ancient man in a Zhongshan suit." Later, I gradually understood. It turned out he was a "modern man in ancient attire" with a fresh mind, often having unique insights in both learning and creation. This is truly rare and valuable, more important than anything else. Regarding the inheritance of artistic heritage, Guo Bang proposed a "avoid and learn" method, which is also very reasonable. He said, "avoid": strive to make the character designs different from those in "Water Margin Leaves" and "Chen Laolian's Works." "learn": draw inspiration from Chen Laolian's portrayal of character expressions and his use of lines and composition. I fully agree with Guo Bang's perspective because he avoids the stance and viewpoints of ancient painters, while learning their technical methods. The times are different, and perceptions of characters in novels should also vary. Therefore, one must avoid clinging to outdated viewpoints. The characters remain unchanged, and their attire is also unchanged, so one must draw inspiration from the methods of expression. This dialectical approach to artistic heritage is the correct attitude for renewing and promoting traditional Chinese art. "Let labor exceed thought, and you are a minor painter; let thought exceed labor, and you approach the perfection of art." Leonardo da Vinci's words seem to be speaking directly to today's painters. After all, aren't some painters today who have completely abandoned the pursuit of life and artistic philosophy? Guo Bang is a painter who thinks deeply; his labor is remarkable. However, only when serious thought guides his labor can he achieve results that satisfy most readers. I believe Guo Bang himself will summarize this point. I first became familiar with Guo Bang's works before meeting him as a person. He is an expert in drawing serial illustrations, especially in using the techniques of Chinese painting to depict historical figures. He is a unique master in this field today. While meticulously portraying characters from Dream of the Red Chamber, he dedicates himself entirely to seeking the heroic models of the heroes of Water Margin. With the same brush, he creates two completely different worlds—something not every painter can achieve. This makes me think that as a character painter, one must possess the talent of a great actor, able to embody anyone, excelling in both literary and martial roles. Guo Bang can paint Lu Zhishen as well as Lin Daiyu, proving he is equally adept with both male and female characters. That surpasses even the talents of actors.
