Publish Date: 2005-01-01
Features: "Direct English" is a set of listening and speaking intensive teaching materials specially designed for English learners. It is another classic work by Louis Alexander, the author of "New Concept English." Unlike "New Concept English," "Direct English" adopts the form of a series of short dramas, integrating language knowledge into the storyline. Learners achieve the goal of strengthening their English listening and speaking skills by imitating authentic American English. This series of textbooks is divided into 8 volumes, 3 levels, with difficulty levels distributed as follows:
● Books 1-3 are suitable for beginners in English;
● Books 4-6 are suitable for intermediate English learners;
● Books 7-8 are suitable for advanced English learners.
"Direct English" follows the general principles of English learning, structuring the based on the three stages of the learning process: "building" (accumulation) — "consolidation" — "expanding." At the same time, the short drama plots are close to American life, with vivid and distinct characters, lively and humorous language, and an evolving storyline that keeps learners engaged for long-term study, thereby achieving the desired learning outcomes.
Each book is divided into 9 units, with each unit consisting of 3 lessons. Self-assessment is designed at the end of each unit, including a summary of key points and self-tests. A vocabulary list is provided at the back of the book for reference.
Each lesson includes three parts: the main dialogue (or main text), language learning and practice, and translation. The study of the main dialogue (or main text) is the process of accumulating language knowledge; the language learning and practice section includes key grammar explanations, extended dialogues, and extended exercises. The extended dialogues help learners consolidate the language knowledge accumulated previously and improve their listening skills, while the extended exercises provide speaking practice, achieving the effect of balanced listening and speaking.
The lesson schedule is as follows: each lesson requires 1-2 hours, each unit requires 3-6 hours, and each book requires 30-60 hours; users can adjust their learning pace based on their own foundation.
