Presence (and) Existence: Re-emphasizing Traditional Chinese Thought through "Existence": The Metaphysical "Being"

Author: Wu Xiaoming
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2005-09-01
Features: This book originates from an impulse to clarify the meaning of "SEIN[BEING]," a very fundamental and, in a sense, very common word in Indo-European languages. Calling it an "impulse" might lead to some misunderstanding, as the author has actually been contemplating this issue for a long time. The initial drafts of the main parts of this book, i.e., the first and second parts, were actually completed as early as 2000. During the process of discussing the meaning of Heidegger's "SEIN," the author began to delve deeply into the philosophical significance of the dual usage of the Chinese word "," which expresses both "possession" and what is termed "existence." Since the author started considering these issues, several relevant works have been published domestically. The recently compiled book Being and the Western Philosophical Tradition collects major Chinese-language papers on the "Being" problem along with translations of some foreign-language papers into Chinese. It may be the most noteworthy work in this field so far, and interested readers are encouraged to refer to it.
