How long can a dream last?—14 years. How many 14-year periods are there in life?——This book was completed in the summer of 1991 when I was 16 years old. To this day of its publication, 14 long years have passed between them. Though called long, they seemed to pass in the blink of an eye. The innocent face of my youth has now become "dust-covered." Once you enter the mortal world, time rushes by. I still remember the time when my dream shattered and I wrote an old work, Fleeting Rainbow:
"Restless, lying awake, listening to the frost wind rolling up the curtains.
Cold and deep, the cold clouds dimly reflect the lonely moonlight.
Long night, thoughts in chaos, frostlight adds to the traveler's sorrow.
Thinking of Chang'lian, she should resemble me,
Her sorrow matches my aging youth.
Not meant to be, yet how can I bear it,
With little chance.
Bian He, empty-handed with jade,
Mao Shi, hard to show her sharpness,
But in the years to come, looking back,
It will be tears soaked through the clothes."
Now, the dream has come true. Looking back, I was startled to realize that my current state of mind perfectly matches the prediction I made 14 years ago—indeed, tears soaked through the clothes.
I was born into a humble family with three siblings, the youngest. My parents were ordinary workers with meager income. I grew up with my second uncle. I was naturally sensitive to words and could write essays as soon as I learned to write, even understanding traditional Chinese characters without formal instruction. In middle school, I would lose myself in old editions of traditional Chinese prose, unable to sleep or eat. At that time, my life goal was to become a writer, to depict all the complexities of life. Because I am a pessimistic optimist. Life is short, and I hoped to immerse myself in the world of literature, using my pen to transform "a lifetime" into "many lifetimes."
This martial arts novel is my debut. Since I was 11, I became obsessed with martial arts novels. By the time I was 14, I felt deeply poisoned by them, and the only "antidote" was to write martial arts novels myself.
