How long does neonatal jaundice last?

Patient's question:

My baby had a high jaundice level right after birth. His hands and body skin were yellow. How long does newborn jaundice usually last?

Doctor's answer:

Newborns begin to show jaundice again 2-3 days after birth, it becomes most prominent 4-5 days later, and it naturally fades away within 7-14 days. Generally, the condition is good without any adverse reactions, referred to as "physiological jaundice." Premature infants, due to more immature liver function, experience jaundice appearing later, around the 3rd or 4th day, and it lasts longer. Premature infants' jaundice can persist for 14 days or even longer. During treatment, patients should maintain a regulated diet, follow a regular routine, actively participate in physical exercise, regulate physical and mental health, and keep personal hygiene to avoid bacterial invasion due to weakened immunity.
