How to Treat Neonatal Jaundice Effectively

Patient's question:

My baby had a high jaundice level right after birth. His hands and skin were yellow. How should neonatal jaundice be treated?

Doctor's answer:

Your baby has neonatal jaundice. Let me explain a little about jaundice in technical terms. The data obtained through transcutaneous measurement should generally be below 10 (the exact value may vary slightly depending on the instrument). If blood is drawn to measure bilirubin levels in the blood, the normal value is usually below 205 μmol/L (12 mg/dL). For normal infants under 30 days old, the normal range for total bilirubin is 1.7–17.1 μmol/L (0.1–1.0 mg/dL). Direct bilirubin is 0–6.8 μmol/L (0–0.4 mg/dL). Indirect bilirubin is 1.7–10.2 μmol/L (0.1–0.6 mg/dL). Only through urinalysis can the actual level of bilirubin be determined.
