What is the normal value of jaundice in newborns

Patient's question:

My sister just gave birth to a baby today, and the baby has quite severe jaundice. Could you please tell me what the normal value for neonatal jaundice is?

Doctor's answer:

Under normal circumstances, physiological jaundice, in full-term infants, jaundice typically disappears within 2 weeks after birth. During this period, if jaundice is present, the transcutaneous bilirubin measurement should be less than 12.9 mg/dL, which is considered normal. If the infant is premature, jaundice should disappear within 4 weeks after birth. During the jaundiced period, the transcutaneous bilirubin measurement should be less than 15 mg/dL, which is considered normal. If the bilirubin measurement is greater than 12.9 mg/dL, it indicates pathological jaundice. The patient needs to receive systematic and standardized examinations at a regular Grade III A hospital as soon as possible based on their specific condition. This is the only way to provide symptomatic treatment and facilitate rapid recovery.
