He received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1962 and is currently the Director of the Econometrics Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley. His current research topics include the trend of population aging, saving behavior, housing mobility, the ratio of health to mortality, and consumer demand analysis using econometric psychological data, among others. In 2000, he won the Nobel Prize in Economics together with Heckman for his "contributions to the principles and methods of analyzing discrete choices."
