Can I still get syphilis if I use a condom?

Patient's question:

After living with my ex-boyfriend for a while, I found out he had syphilis, and it was quite severe. But we always used condoms, so was it possible to get infected?

Doctor's answer:

Using condoms cannot completely prevent the spread of syphilis. It is only an effective way to prevent syphilis infection during sexual activity, but other routes can still lead to the transmission of syphilis, such as: indirect swimming pools, indirect tableware, and indirect towels, all of which may transmit syphilis. Syphilis is a common chronic disease among sexually transmitted diseases, caused by infection with Treponema pallidum, primarily through sexual transmission. Using condoms cannot completely prevent the spread of syphilis, and the best method is to check with a hospital. Therefore, avoid overly promiscuous sexual behavior, keep the perineum dry, and take contraceptive measures during sexual activity.
