Features: The recognition and proposal of linguistics as an independent science is a modern phenomenon, but the research on its knowledge and theoretical system has a long history. Previous research achievements have become one of the most nationally distinctive and inheritable parts of Chinese cultural heritage. Among these, the study of literary criticism and oral expression has provided historical references for contemporary and modern linguistic research with systematic and rich results. This book is the crystallization of the author's years of dedicated research. Relying on extensive historical materials, the author explains the historical process of the modern Chinese linguistic revolution: the national language construction movement represented by Hu Shi, the mass language construction movement represented by Lu Xun, and the national form construction movement represented by Mao Zedong. This is the process of liberating the linguistic tools: vernacular Chinese liberating classical Chinese, mass language liberating national language, and national form liberating the "foreign-style eight-legged essay." Language is the tool for communication in human survival and development, co-occurring with human survival practices. "Yu" refers to speech (oral language), and "wen" refers to writing. Speech, characters, and writing are the elements constituting the functional connotation of language tools and are also the main objects of linguistic research.
