Features: The editors strive to make the guidebook possess the following characteristics:
1. Strengthening the organic connection among the three major rock types: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. Not only does it formally replace the three experimental guidebooks—《Experimental Guidebook for Igneous Petrology》, 《Experimental Guidebook for Sedimentary Petrology》, and 《Experimental Guidebook for Metamorphic Petrology》—published by our university between 1989 and 1990 with a single 《Experimental Guidebook for Petrology》 in terms of form, but it also, based on the analysis of the commonalities and differences in petrographic characteristics of the three rock types and the content of the original guidebooks, dedicates a chapter to unifying the methods and steps for rock observation and description. This changes the previous situation where each rock type had its own set of instructions, effectively integrating the experimental content of the three rock types.
2. Better integrating the laboratory course with classroom teaching and field practice. Teaching practice has shown that students have a higher interest in studying thin sections collected from places they have visited or will visit during laboratory sessions.
3. Reflecting the reform of laboratory teaching methods from "emphasis on assessment" to "emphasis on teaching skills," with the goal of strengthening practice and improving abilities. The rock laboratory course is an important teaching link that connects theory with practice. To encourage students to take their regular laboratory sessions seriously, the guidebook has abolished the identification of unknown samples.
4. Enhancing applicability. In terms of experimental material selection and laboratory course arrangements, it offers a broader scope compared to the current teaching plan. On one hand, it provides instructors with more flexibility in choosing materials; on the other hand, it strengthens the guidebook's applicability, making it suitable for advanced-level rock thin section analysis courses and reference for petrographic and mineralogical identification professionals.
5. Rich in illustrations. Compared to the previously published petrology-related experimental guidebooks by our university, the illustrations have been carefully selected and purposefully designed. This book is a supplementary textbook for the university-level course 《Petrology》. It includes content such as rock observation and description, igneous rock experiments, sedimentary rock experiments, metamorphic rock experiments, etc.
