Features: The prose and paintings of Mr. Feng Zikai are truly a match made in heaven, long admired by the world. This collection of fairy tales embodies both, with its prose being simple and natural yet profound in meaning, and its illustrations fresh and rustic yet full of ingenious creativity. It brings not only laughter but also deep lessons, truly living up to Mr. Feng's analogy of the "Fuling Cake."
When I was a child, I always wanted to eat cake, but my mother would only buy Fuling Cake for me. It was very sweet, fragrant, and delicious. Later, as I grew older, I realized the reason my mother always bought Fuling Cake for me: it contained Fuling, a medicinal ingredient that promoted health and longevity. When I became an adult, my appetite waned, and I no longer craved Fuling Cake. However, I often used it as a model when painting and writing. Fuling Cake was not only delicious but also nourishing, keeping one healthy. Similarly, I believed that art and literature should not only be aesthetically pleasing but also edifying, fostering spiritual well-being. For decades, my paintings and writings have been guided by the standard of Fuling Cake.
The ten or so stories in this collection were originally meant as light-hearted jokes and casual chats for children. However, I never liked jokes and chats that were purely for amusement without meaning. So, a few of them still follow the spirit of Fuling Cake: behind each story lies a lesson. I hope readers will embrace this, just as I used to love Fuling Cake as a child.
