Features: Reading and Writing is an intermediate-to-advanced English reading and writing textbook and an important part of the Contemporary Graduate English series. This textbook is divided into two volumes, designed for two semesters of use. Each volume contains 10 units, with each unit featuring two texts: Text A for intensive reading and Text B for extensive reading. Each unit generally requires 3–4 class hours, and teachers can adjust the schedule based on students' needs. The primary goal of this textbook is to cultivate graduate students' reading comprehension skills in academic texts. Additionally, it emphasizes basic writing skills training and guidance in practical writing. The teaching methodology recommended for this textbook includes pre-class previewing and preparation of discussion questions. In class, teachers should facilitate discussions, encouraging students to express themselves in English as much as possible, resorting to bilingual communication only when necessary. Teachers should provide targeted explanations for key and challenging points while avoiding a one-sided lecture approach. At the same time, emphasis should be placed on developing students' independent learning and critical thinking skills.
The main features of this textbook are as follows:
1. Wide Range of Text Selections: The texts cover various aspects of social sciences and natural sciences, offering rich and engaging content.
2. In-depth Content: The texts are thought-provoking, suitable for discussion-based teaching at the graduate level, encouraging students to express personal opinions on certain topics.
3. Natural and Accurate Language: The selected texts have been carefully curated and are authentic masterpieces. The realistic context, appropriate word choices, and abundant language points make this textbook suitable for graduate classroom instruction, as well as for advanced English training programs and self-study.
4. Detailed and Clear Annotations: Annotations provide detailed explanations of challenging points, helping students address linguistic and cultural difficulties in advance during pre-class preparation. This also facilitates self-study for those using the textbook independently.
5. Emphasis on Key Vocabulary with Balanced Reading and Writing: Each text is followed by a glossary of new words. In Text A, words and phrases are listed separately for easier learning and memorization, with a focus on helping students fully understand the usage of certain terms. Additionally, each unit includes Word Study, which covers verb collocations and vocabulary tailored to different writing topics, highlighting the integration of reading and writing.
6. Practical and Applied Writing: The writing section of this textbook emphasizes both basic skill training and practical application, effectively improving graduate students' English writing proficiency.
7. Diverse and Appropriately Challenging Exercises: Exercise design includes multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, discussion questions, and vocabulary exercises. It also features pre-reading questions (Lead-in questions) and review exercises for reinforcement.
During the development of Reading and Writing, the authors were greatly supported by the foreign expert Tom Kellie (USA). He reviewed the manuscript of this textbook, and his contributions are sincerely appreciated. Additionally, some content from foreign publications was included in this textbook. Due to the broad scope of material selection, it was not possible to list all sources here. The authors express their gratitude to all concerned parties.
