Features: In compiling this series, we have focused on two aspects. On one hand, when selecting books, we aimed for comprehensiveness, novelty, and representativeness and forward-looking perspectives. We did not favor a single viewpoint or only include books from one foreign publisher. While the core disciplines of linguistics and applied linguistics were given due attention, the branch disciplines were not neglected. Corpus linguistics and linguistic statistics, as emerging fields, were included with dedicated monographs; syntax and semantics, which have long been studied, also featured the latest works in these areas. On the other hand, we invited renowned domestic doctoral supervisors and master supervisors to write introductory guides for each book, paving the way for readers. The extensive collection of monographs on linguistics and applied linguistics might seem overwhelming for beginners. To assist them, we have asked experts to write approximately 10,000 words of introductory materials for each book in this series. Even if the content is unfamiliar, anyone who reviews the guide before reading and revisits it afterward will be able to grasp the structure and key points. This book serves as a guide to contemporary semantic theory, primarily reflecting the achievements of scholars from universities in Europe, especially Lancaster University in the UK, in the construction, development, and research of corpora during the 1990s. It is also a collective contribution from 27 contributors, editors, and publishers, dedicated to one of the pioneers of corpus linguistics. It plays a positive role in advancing linguistics teaching, research, foreign language teaching, and research in China. New disciplines include the history of linguistics, philosophy of language, cognitive linguistics, anthropological linguistics, the origins of language, and grammaticalization theory. It includes influential works by contemporary linguistic masters such as Saussure, Sapir, and Bloomfield, adding to its authoritative value.
