This book was compiled by the author with the assistance of Professor Chen Guojian of the former Guangzhou Foreign Language College in 1988. It served as the general editor of the common teaching material for Spanish majors in Chinese universities, "Chinese-Spanish Translation Tutorial." The book was published by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press of Beijing Foreign Studies University in 1989 and has been used in universities across China for nearly 10 years, receiving praise and valuable feedback from peers. In the author's own teaching practice, many issues were gradually identified. Mainly, after 10 years, the explanations and materials in the book had become outdated. Therefore, with strong support from the Research Office of Beijing Foreign Studies University and the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, the author made substantial revisions and re-wrote the original "Chinese-Spanish Translation Tutorial." This new edition, "New Chinese-Spanish Translation Tutorial," first strengthens and updates the chapter "Fundamentals of Translation Studies." We believe that as a university-level textbook, "Translation Tutorial" should include sufficient theoretical explanations. In this chapter, we selectively introduce many research findings from both domestic and international translation studies by the end of the 20th century, which are closely related to translation practice. Naturally, it also reflects the author's own insights into translation theory over the past 20 years. Additionally, examples of translation between Chinese and Spanish have been added where necessary. Chapters 2 to 6 correspond to the original chapters 2 to 8. Besides making appropriate adjustments and additions to the original chapters to improve their logical structure and practicality, the main changes in these 5 chapters are as follows:
1. All explanations have been completely rewritten. The explanations are based on translation studies, grammar, comparative linguistics, or social semiotics, providing correct theoretical guidance for learning translation methods and techniques, striving to combine theory with practice.
2. The examples have been largely updated, with an update rate close to 50%.
3. Three types of exercises are included: translation example analysis, single-sentence translation practice, and short-essay translation error correction practice. Reference translations are provided for all exercises and appended at the end of the book. The purpose of the first two types of exercises is to help students digest and master the content of each section outside of class. These exercises can also be guided by teachers in class. The third type of exercise, although also coordinated with the content of each section, consists of comprehensive error correction exercises, suitable for discussion by the entire class under teacher guidance.
Chapter 7, "Translation at the Discourse Level," is a completely new chapter with detailed explanations and abundant examples. Translation courses are practical courses, and students need to practice extensively to truly master techniques and develop translation skills. Therefore, teachers using this tutorial should also select additional exercises for students to complete outside of class, which the teacher can review and comment on in class. If the selected exercises are closely coordinated with the content of each section, the effectiveness of the tutorial will be even better.
