Features: American literature has only a 200-year history since its birth, belonging to the younger generation in world literature. However, if literature is both a product of social and cultural development and a profound reflection of social reality, then with the rapid development of American society, American literature has long outgrown its childhood and demonstrated an independent spirit and mature style. Born in the smoke of the War of Independence, it grew through the exploration of national themes, and flourished in the tide of social evolution and development. Over the past 200 years, a large number of world-renowned writers have emerged, and a series of works that have greatly influenced the development of world literature have been published. Today, American literature has become a towering, lush, and fruit-bearing tree in the forest of world literature.
American Literature is divided into five main parts, basically arranged according to the traditional period divisions in the history of American literature in chronological order. To meet the diverse needs of readers, this book follows a principle of alternating narration and commentary. Within the framework of the period divisions in the history of American literature, in addition to introducing the social and cultural background of the United States, it briefly narrates the main characteristics and important writers of American literature in different periods to help readers grasp the development of American literature. In each part, the authors focus on the several writers who made significant contributions to the development of American literature and even world literature. They introduce their lives and major works, striving to reflect the overall picture of American literature through the interpretation of these writers' creations. At the same time, the book also attempts to select representative writers from different schools, genders, and races in its choice of writers, aiming to reveal the pluralistic features of American literature and allow readers to observe and understand American culture and literature from different perspectives. At the end of the main text, a timeline of literary events is provided for reference. The authors hope this book will help readers in China better understand American literature, which is rooted in American culture.
