The protagonist of Invisible Man is a young Black man who strives to gain recognition and wants to "make himself seen." He has been a "honest Black man," trying to find his place in the American industry and becoming a useful cog in the machine; he has also joined the "Brotherhood," attaching himself to left-wing politics—every attempt he has made seems to place a Black man in a visible position in American life, but none of these things have allowed him to enter the ideal spiritual civilization he seeks, so he now prefers to be an underground person.
