From then on, Dori only wore red clothes to be like the Taros; he tried a series of hilarious actions to become the best Taro.
The protagonist Dori of Dori’s Growing Pains is a little potato who was adopted by the Taro couple from the orphanage when he was an infant and came to the village of Taros. He wants to become the best Taro, but as he grows older, Dori begins to realize that he and his sister are different from the other Taro friends—they all turn red when they grow up, while they become more and more yellow. Dori is very troubled and tries many ways to change himself, but they all fail. In the process of trying to change himself, many stories happen in the life of the village of Taros: from hoping to change his identity through legends, to suspecting himself of being excluded and running away from home; from realizing his own abilities and working to pay for the gene conversion surgery, to thinking that working was too slow and participating in a marathon race; from winning the first kiss from a Taro girl with sincerity, to winning the victory in the football match through teamwork. Dori has gone through a process of doubting himself, denying himself, believing in himself, and becoming a true man. In this process, the love of parents, the friendship of friends, and the sweet love are intertwined, shaping a vivid and lifelike potato character.
