He was an European who took an interest in Chinese culture and reported and information about China's science, philosophy, nature, geography, language, and folklore to Europe. He lived in China for many years, serving as both a scholar and a political activist. In 1650, due to the invasion by the Qing army, the Christian court of the last Ming emperor was threatened. The Yongli Emperor sent him as an envoy to Lisbon to seek support from European governments for the Ming's anti-Qing struggle. His mission ultimately failed, and China remained under Qing rule for more than two centuries.
