Illustrated Dictionary of Historical Foreign Clothing

Publish Date: 2002-02-01
Features: This book is the result of Zeng Huijie's research on historical costumes, covering both Chinese and foreign, ancient and modern, up to the 1930s of the 20th century, spanning 3,000 years—truly extensive. It is an expansion based on the author's 1996 published book, "Illustrated Collection of Historical Costumes in China and Abroad." Due to her graduation from the Costume Design program of the Stage Art Department at the Chinese National Academy of Dramatic Arts, Zeng Huijie had a solid foundation in costume design for historical drama characters during her studies. After graduation, she was assigned to the Cultural Troupe of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions as a costume designer. She further pursued a master's degree, combining theory and practice. With relentless diligence and continuous learning on the job, her skills and knowledge complemented each other. This book serves as an explanatory, theoretical, and practical guide for costume designers, filmmakers, theater professionals, painters, and others in both China and abroad. Objectively, it fills a gap in the field in China at present. The author has extensively studied both Chinese and foreign literature, supplemented by rich practical experience. Her perspective is both broad and far-reaching. She is not overly self-boastful but also not confined by subjective or objective limitations, resulting in well-supported arguments and a richly illustrated text. From the author's own introduction to the book, one can discern her purpose in writing. Although the text is lengthy, it is necessary to quote a passage as the conclusion of the preface to represent my own views. Essentially, our perspectives largely align, which is truly gratifying.
