Childhood is a part of Gorky's trilogy of autobiographical novels. As early as the 1890s, Gorky had the idea of writing a biographical work. Between 1908 and 1910, Lenin visited Gorky at his residence on Capri Island in Italy, and Gorky spoke to him on several occasions about his childhood and youth. Once, Lenin said to Gorky, "You should write everything down, old friend, you must write it down! This is all very educational, truly!" Gorky replied, "One day, I will write it down." Soon, he fulfilled this promise. In this book, Gorky truthfully depicts his difficult childhood, reflecting some typical features of the social life of that time, especially painting a vivid picture of the customs and traditions of the petty bourgeois class in Russia. It not only reveals the "heavy and oppressive ugly deeds" but also portrays many outstanding ordinary people around the author, among whom the image of his grandmother is one of the most glorious and poetic in Russian literature. It was these ordinary people who gave young Gorky a positive influence, helping him develop a character that would not yield to ugly phenomena and shaping him into a strong and kind-hearted individual. Childhood was written between 1912 and 1913. It was first published in installments from August 1913 to January 1914 in the newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta. It was first published as a standalone book in Berlin in 1914. The Chinese translation is based on the Thirtieth Volume of Gorky, published for the first time in 1956. This book is printed according to the Collected Works of Gorky (Volume 15) published by our house.
