Brief Introduction:
The entire textbook is divided into two main parts. The first part, consisting of the first seven chapters, covers basic theories and fundamental knowledge. Since writing has its own techniques and methods, there are inherent basic principles and scientific requirements in the art of writing. Learning to write requires mastering these fundamentals first and fully. Traditional education also places great emphasis on the principles of writing: the Book of Changes states that there are things and order, and rhetoric should be based on sincerity; the Classic of Poetry says that words should be orderly; the Zuo Zhuan asserts that words without literary style cannot travel far; Lu Ji's Rhapsody on Literature mentions the rules and patterns of writing, meaning the proper sequence of literary expressions (i.e., rules); later scholars such as Liu Xie, Liu Zhiqi, Chen Kai, and even Zang Xuecheng and Ma Jianzhong all advocated that writing has rules and explored the laws of writing. These foundational theories and knowledge are of great significance in guiding writing.
Although there are many types of writing, all forms share essential elements such as theme, subject matter, structure, expression, and language. Each of these aspects has theoretical knowledge and inherent rules. From the perspective of the writing process—from collection and conception to expression and revision—each stage also involves theoretical knowledge and scientific methods. In terms of genres and styles, there are narrative texts, argumentative texts, descriptive texts, and applied texts. Each type has its own distinct characteristics and requirements, with its own specific norms. Therefore, mastering these foundational theories and knowledge is of great importance for writing.
The remaining chapters constitute the second part, which discusses various genres in order: narrative texts, argumentative texts, descriptive texts, applied texts, and literary works, totaling five categories with 23 types of styles. While good writing should be logical, substantive, organized, and articulate—this refers to its commonality—different genres also have their unique characteristics and requirements. To write a narrative text, one must know how to describe people and events, as well as depict scenes and objects; for argumentative texts, one must be skilled in analysis, judgment, reasoning, and argumentation; for descriptive texts, one must reveal the essential features of things and provide clear explanations; and for applied texts, one must correctly use various formats and express ideas appropriately. Mastering these five categories of texts will develop comprehensive writing skills, creating the necessary foundation for post-graduation success in the workplace. Based on the above analysis, the arrangement and content of the textbook are both comprehensive and scientific.
