In 1927, he joined the Communist Party of China and participated in the Huangma Uprising. During the War of Liberation, he served as Deputy Military Commander of the Ninth Army and Commander of the Twenty-fifth Division, Military Commander of the Fourth Army, and Commander of the Cavalry Command of the Fourth Front Army. During the War of Resistance Against Japan, he served as Commander of the 386th Brigade of the 129th Division of the Eighth Route Army, Military Commander of the Shandong Military Subcommand, Commander of the East Front Corps, and Deputy Military Commander of the Shandong Military Region. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he served as Military Commander of the Shandong Military Region, Military Commander of the Third Corps of the Chinese People's Volunteers, Deputy Military Commander of the East China Military Region, Deputy Chief of Staff of the People's Liberation Army, Military Commander of the Nanjing Military Region, Vice Minister of National Defense and Military Commander of the Nanjing Military Region, Secretary of the Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, Vice Minister of National Defense and Military Commander of the Nanjing Military Region, Standing Committee Member of the Central Military Commission. In 1955, he was awarded the rank of General and the First-Class August 1st Medal, the First-Class Independent Freedom Medal, and the First-Class Liberation Medal.
