Can a pregnancy test detect ectopic pregnancy?

Patient's question:

I have been married to my husband for two years. Recently, we want to have a baby, and we have been preparing for pregnancy. Yesterday, I used a pregnancy test kit and found out that I am really pregnant. However, I am very worried about an ectopic pregnancy, so I want to ask you if a pregnancy test kit can detect ectopic pregnancy?

Doctor's answer:

A pregnancy test cannot determine if it is an ectopic pregnancy; it only checks if you are pregnant. If you want to know if it is an ectopic pregnancy, you can go to the hospital for an ultrasound or a culdocentesis. Ectopic pregnancy usually occurs outside the uterine cavity, mostly in the position of the fallopian tube. If an ectopic pregnancy is detected, early treatment is crucial. It should not exceed 40 days, as prolonged delay can lead to severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, and even life-threatening risks.
