Yu Genyuan is a male scholar whose ancestral home is in Taixing, Jiangsu, and he was born in Shanghai. After graduating from the Chinese Language Department of Nanjing University in July 1963, he worked at the Institute of Linguistics of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences for 21 years and at the Institute of Language and Character Application of the State Language Commission for 14 years. He is currently a researcher and doctoral supervisor in the (Broadcasting and Hosting Arts College) of Beijing Broadcasting University, specializing in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. His major works include A New Word Dictionary of Modern Chinese (Beijing Language and Culture University Press, 1994, edited by him), Chinese Language Application Research in the 20th Century (Shuhai Press, 1996), An Outline of Applied Linguistics Theory (Huayu Teaching Press, 1999, edited by him), A Dictionary of Chinese Internet Language (China Economic Press, 2001, edited by him), and An Overview of Internet Language (China Economic Press, 2001, edited by him).
