Publishing Date: 1997-09-01
Features: Early Western Zhou bronzes largely inherited the style of late Shang bronzes, while introducing some new modifications and improvements in form and design. They also developed their own style in casting inscriptions. From the mid-Western Zhou to the late period, bronze decorative art shifted from mysterious and enigmatic to simple and unadorned, favoring concise and clear aesthetics. Bronzes from the feudal lords and states of the Western Zhou era have been discovered in large quantities and are widely distributed, including many exquisite pieces with fine forms and patterns. Some bronzes are inscribed with lengthy texts. These feudal states and their bronzes, along with those of the royal domain, reflect the development level of Western Zhou bronze art from different perspectives. Due to differences in the relationships between feudal states and the Zhou royal court, or as a result of the passage of time and changes in space, the bronzes of these states exhibit distinct historical characteristics and artistic styles. This book selects over 170 bronzes from feudal lords and states of the Western Zhou, including fine pieces from Taiwan Province and overseas collections.
