Features: "Ali" is a transliteration from Tibetan, meaning "territory," "domain," or "region." Until the early 9th century, the area was still called "Xiangxiong." In Chinese historical records, different dynasties had varying names for it. Before the 9th century, it was known as "Yangtong," during the Yuan Dynasty as "Nalisuoguluksen," in the Ming Dynasty as "Elishi," and it was only in the Qing Dynasty that it was called "Ali," which remains the name to this day. In Tibetan ancient texts, however, the term "Ali" only appeared in the mid-9th century. After the descendants of the Tibetan Empire's kings arrived in this region originally ruled by the eighteen divisions of Xiangxiong and established their roots here, they believed that from this point onward, the upper region truly came under the jurisdiction of the descendants of the Tibetan kings. Thus, the name "Ali" came into use. By the late 9th to 10th centuries or even later, the term "Ali" frequently appeared in various Tibetan historical texts.
