Painted History: Interpretation of Foreign Historical Paintings

Author: Chen Zhongdan/Qian Cheng

Publish Date: 2002-10-01
Features: As the title suggests, this book is about historical paintings. What are historical paintings? Alongside landscape paintings, flower-and-bird paintings, and figure paintings, historical paintings depict historical events and scenes. Previously, no works of the same kind had been seen in China, so I offer this as a starting point, hoping to inspire greater contributions in the future. The main body of the book selects one hundred representative historical paintings for detailed interpretation. Due to the large number and high quality of modern historical paintings, many of them are included, while other periods are also covered. Among them, there are more works by Western historical painters, but works by artists from Eastern countries are also included. In terms of technique, the book primarily focuses on realistic oil paintings, while also embracing works of different styles and genres, including naive sketches by anonymous folk artists.
