Features: The fourth edition of the textbook was finalized in 1994. In the nearly seven years since then, life sciences have made significant advancements in fields such as cell biology and genomics. As a result, many universities have independently offered courses like cell biology and medical genetics, which are central themes of the fourth edition. Meanwhile, the management systems of higher education institutions in China have undergone unprecedented adjustments. A considerable number of medical schools have been merged into comprehensive universities, and most of these comprehensive universities have strengths in the life sciences field. Consequently, the biology education for medical students is now often handled by the biology departments of these comprehensive universities.
In response to these changes, the authors have adopted the following approach for the new edition: the textbook should serve as an introduction to life sciences for all medical disciplines. Based on this approach, the authors have made the following adjustments to the fourth edition:
① Focus on introducing general principles of biology;
② Reduce the content on biological system classification and classification systems;
③ Decrease the coverage of cell biology and genetics;
④ Significantly expand the content on the relationship between biology and medicine.
The goal is to use the latest advancements in life sciences to showcase future trends in medicine, enabling medical students to gain an early understanding of the field and increasing their interest in studying medicine.
