Features: The author of this book studies the Eight Formations of New Prescriptions contained in the 50th and 51st volumes of Zhang Jingyue's Jingyue Quanshu (Comprehensive Works of Jingyue), thereby revealing Zhang Jingyue's academic thought, dialectical methodology, prescription formulation experience, and the essence of medicinal use. Hence, the book is titled A Brief Explanation and Application of Jingyue's New Eight Formations of Prescriptions. Zhang Jingyue often used medicine like a general, classifying eight types of prescriptions—tonifying, harmonizing, attacking, dispersing, cooling, warming, consolidating, and regulating—as the Eight Formations. The book compiles 186 newly created prescriptions, distinguishing them from the ancient Eight Formations summarized and generalized by Zhang Jingyue, hence the name "New Eight Formations of Prescriptions." The book is divided into eight chapters in the order of the Eight Formations. At the beginning of each chapter, there is an analysis of the application, contraindications, and differentiation, with a focus on the importance of applying and avoiding each method and prescription. This serves as a guide for learning and applying the new formations. Next, the author studies each prescription according to the order listed in the new formations. Each prescription is elaborated on in terms of its name, composition, usage, efficacy, indications, explanation, key points, application, and experimental research. Zhang Jingyue's new prescriptions are all derived from clinical practice, and their application under proper guidance often yields excellent results. They are favored and widely used by later generations of physicians. Among them, the Left and Right Returning Decoctions (Pills), Zanyu Dan, Yuniujian, and Jinshui Liujun are renowned formulas that have left a lasting legacy. Therefore, by categorizing the 186 new prescriptions into the Eight Formations, providing detailed analysis and interpretation, and combining scientific rigor, practicality, and readability, this book can be considered an excellent guide and companion for medical learners.
