Features: After the China Ethnic Minority Status and Development Survey was officially approved and designated as a key project of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Yi ethnic group was selected as one of the surveyed groups when formulating the survey plan. The project leadership decided to collaborate between the Institute of Ethnic Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Institute of Ethnic Studies of Liangshan Prefecture to conduct a survey in a county selected from Liangshan Prefecture. The Yi ethnic group is distributed across Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Guangxi provinces, with the most concentrated population in the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province. For a long time, social development in Liangshan has been slow. Before the democratic reform, it was still the central area of the nine old counties in Liangshan Prefecture, with the capital of Zhaojue County being the prefecture's seat of government. Zhaojue County is an ethnic Yi county, where Yi people account for 96% of the total population.
