The time frame for selecting the poems extends from the Eastern Han Dynasty to the Xinhai Revolution, that is, from Ban Gu's "Elegies on History" from the Eastern Han Dynasty to the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty's feudal rule in 1911. The criteria for selecting the poems include originality in conception, valuable insights, and strong literary and artistic appeal, meaning a perfect combination of historical commentary content and poetic form. The annotations not only include character explanations and word definitions but also focus on clarifying the meaning of the poems and providing commentary. Given the characteristics of elegiac poems, the annotations also briefly quote the original context of the poems and relevant historical records for reference, enhancing the readers' interest in reading. Elegiac poems combine history and literature, belonging to a marginal form of poetry, making the annotations particularly challenging.
