Mazas Violin Studies: Op. 36, Book 3: (Studies for Artists)

Author: (French) Mazas

Publish Date: 2003-09-01
Features: The French violinist Mazas composed many duets and etudes for violin. Opus 36 consists of three volumes: "Special Etudes," "Gorgeous Etudes," and "For Artists." This is an excellent and highly artistic exercise textbook, which includes various techniques for both hands, as well as many exercises in singing-style tone quality, timbre, and vibrato. When studying, it is essential to pay attention to integrating techniques with musical expression. Due to the development of violin performance science, the shortcomings of these etudes have become increasingly evident in training. This is mainly reflected in the editing, such as bowing, slurring, fingerings, position choices, shifting methods, extended and retained fingers, dynamics, and accent marks, which are often outdated and unscientific. Through these exercises, students may learn various techniques, but due to the aforementioned flaws, they may unconsciously develop many unscientific habits, which will bring great difficulties to their future studies. Considering all these reasons, I have revised this textbook as much as possible according to scientific playing methods, making it both valuable for training and practical application. It helps learners not only master various techniques but also learn scientific playing methods and cultivate a scientific mindset.
In some parts of the score, two types of fingerings are marked (upper and lower). These are two options and should not be mixed.
